TYPE OF SAFARI CAMPS

LAND-BASED CAMPS
Land-based camps offer travellers both day and night game drives throughout the year (with the exception of those in the Moremi Game Reserve, where night drives are not permitted). Some camps have game hides from which you can watch wildlife up-close, or even sleep out under the stars in the company of an armed professional guide, while bush walks and walking safaris are sometimes an option as well.  When flood levels are high, many land-based camps offer seasonal water activities, such as mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) excursions, boating, and fishing.

FAMILY FRIENDLY SAFARI CAMPS:

Botswana is a magnificent destination for families as it offers superb adventures for slightly older children,  ideally from about eight years upwards.  One attractive aspect of a Botswana family safari is the variety of activities on offer from game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, to water activities, to game walks. All of these activities help to keep your children engaged and active. In Botswana, there are a handful of camps which cater well for children,  although most will insist that each family staying books its own private guide and vehicle, allowing your activities to be more flexible to suit your family’s needs.  A few camps have a dedicated family room with inter-connecting bedrooms making your stay stress-free as you soak up the African sun.
Family friendly camps: Vumbura Plains, Little Vumbura Camp, Jao Camp, Jacana Camp, Seba Camp, Chitabe Lediba, Banoka Bush Camp, Dumatau Camp, Savuti Camp, Kalahari Plains Camp, Xakanaxa Camp

SAFARI CAMP ACTIVITIES

Game drives
This activity is central to all land camps and safaris are conducted by open 4x4 Land Rovers. It gives you the opportunity to see a lot of animal and bird species. Animals may include Elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, cheetah and many more

Night drives
Night game drives are offered  in some areas of Botswana giving you the opportunity to experience some of the nocturnal mammals that are very rare to be encountered during the day. However this activity is not offered in the public  parks and  reserves but rather in the private concession areas.

Bird watching
Birds are found in many areas of Botswana, although some areas offer better bird-watching activity than others. The greatest number of birds may be seen between October and March in the migration period. Some bird species include Pel's Fishing-Owl, White-backed Night Heron, Short-clawed Lark, African Skimmer, Rock Pratincole and Swamp Boubou.

Boating Safaris
This activity is common in most water or combination camps where you'll travel out into the surrounding areas by boat to look for game and bird species while enjoying the general scenery.

Guided walks
This offers the opportunity of exploring the area on foot with the company of an experienced guide.

Canoe and Mokoro
Many camps offers an opportunities to explore the wildlife of the waterways by means of a  canoe or mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) .This may be the best or only way of reaching certain locations found in remote areas. This activity is seasonal at some of the camps and can only be enjoyed when the water levels are at an optimum level.

Elephant Back Safari
Participate in the most memorable of game viewing experiences, seated on the back of an Elephant. This activity can be done at selected camps.

Fishing
Fishing as a tourist activity is offered mostly by water-based lodges. The Chobe River offers decent fishing from its more remote locations.
